Location: The marathon takes place along the stunning coastline of Big Sur, California, offering panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, rugged cliffs, and majestic redwood forests. The route stretches from Big Sur to Carmel, showcasing some of the most picturesque scenery on the California coast.
Date and Time: Typically held on the last Sunday of April, approximately 2 weeks after the Boston Marathon, making it an attractive option for athletes interested in completing the “B2B challenge.”
Course: The marathon course is renowned for its challenging yet awe-inspiring route. Runners traverse iconic landmarks such as the Bixby Creek Bridge, known for its architectural splendor and dramatic backdrop, and wind their way through coastal hills and redwood groves. The course’s elevation changes offer both physical and mental challenges, rewarding participants with unmatched views at every turn.

(A) Big Sur Marathon Course Map and Route Info
Below is the modified 2024 Big Sur Route, stating and finishing in Carmel. It has to be changed this year because heavy rains damaged CA Highway 1. Hopefully next year we can go back to the traditional point-to-point route that starts at the famous Big Sur.
There will be 12 aid stations, with two of them providing GU energy gels. Approximate locations are marked on the map.

IMPORTANT: The elevation profile below does NOT match the official website (link). Although gains and losses are very similar, the X-axis (distance) is off by approximately 0.5 – 1 mile. We calculate elevations directly from GPX route data, and then compare with user uploaded GPS tracks to validate accuracy. We have confirmed that our elevation chart below matches several runners’ GPS data.

(D) Hotels and Lodging
(E) Transportation
In previous years, free shuttle services were provided to transport runners to the start line in Big Sur. You are not allowed to drive to or be dropped off at the start area, as Highway 1 will be closed early Sunday morning. So unless you’re staying in Big Sur, your only option is to take the race-provided bus.
In 2024, since you’ll start and finish at the same location, transportation is much easier. However, you’re still strongly recommended to take a free shuttle to the start area instead of driving, as parking is very limited and traffic can be congested.
2024 bus pick-up locations can be found here.
IMPORTANT: If you are staying in Big Sur this year, please note that there will be NO shuttle service to take you to the start area on race day. You may be able to drive to Carmel before the race, but it depends on Caltrans convoy schedule. Please contact the event organizer for concerns and questions.
